Today's Highlight: Gyotaku Fish Printing with Jim Brown (airing at 5:30pm CST)

Jim Brown shares the art of gyotaku fish printing, traditional Japanese method of printing fish, a practice which dates back to the mid-1800s. This form of nature printing was used by fishermen to record their catches, but has also become an art form of its own.

Partner Highlights

Our Educational Partners are one of our favorite highlights of the Fry-Down Festival each year. At the in-person festival, you can find them hosting interactive displays throughout our Cahaba River Adventure course. For this year's virtual Fry-Down, we hope you enjoy these garden-themed videos that they have created especially for you!

Welcome to Birmingham Botanical Gardens!

Since 1962, Birmingham Botanical Gardens has welcomed visitors from across the region and around the world to explore the Gardens' botanical treasures; enjoy nature; and learn about plants, gardening, and the environment. The Gardens' 67.5 acres contain more than 12,000 plants showcased in 28 gardens inspired by culture, nature, and collections. A facility of the Birmingham Park and Recreation Board, the Gardens is the result of a successful public/private partnership between the City of Birmingham and the nonprofit Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, a mission-driven membership organization that seeks to protect, nurture, and share the wonders of the Gardens.

Moths in the Garden with Michelle Reynolds and Ruffner Mountain

Moths are cool, and they provide important eco-services. Besides being efficient and effective pollinators, moths are juicy protein nuggets for birds and other wildlife. As gardeners and stewards, we can help support the habitat infrastructure for moths and other nocturnal insects by:

  • Providing host plants for larvae
  • Planting plenty of plants with pale or white flowers
  • Leaving outside lights off
  • Not using pesticides (insecticides or herbicides)
